What a very powerful video! I often feel that perfectionism is a way of setting yourself up to constantly fail. Nothing is ever good enough. Nothing is ever perfect enough. The "A" on the test could have been an "A+" and so on. The bar is rarely met because it is constantly moving higher and higher. Have you ever heard someone who calls themselves a perfectionist say, "yep, that's it, that was perfect. I did it!" I never have.
I love what Brown has to say on the topic. Perfectionism is about shame and fear and trying hard to be seen as perfect so that we are not judged. Ugh, how tiring! Brown's last line in the video, "you can't ever do anything brave, if you are wearing the straight jacket of what will people think" is so true. The "what will people think" fear IS such a straight jacket. How many thoughts, how many behaviors do we have because of the fear of what others will think. What would you do, say, think if you took off the straight jacket?
