Brene Brown on Perfectionism

What a very powerful video! I often feel that perfectionism is a way of setting yourself up to constantly fail. Nothing is ever good enough. Nothing is ever perfect enough. The "A" on the test could have been an "A+" and so on. The bar is rarely met because it is constantly moving higher and higher. Have you ever heard someone who calls themselves a perfectionist say, "yep, that's it, that was perfect. I did it!" I never have.

I love what Brown has to say on the topic. Perfectionism is about shame and fear and trying  hard to be seen as perfect so that we are not judged. Ugh, how tiring!
Brown's last line in the video, "you can't ever do anything brave, if you are wearing the straight jacket of what will people think" is so true. The "what will people think" fear IS such a straight jacket. How many thoughts, how many behaviors do we have because of the fear of what others will think.

What would you do, say, think if you took off the straight jacket?

Spring is a time of new beginnings and possibilities! Mandala a Day for Spring is an invitation to create a mandala for each day of the spring season to bring balance, mindfulness, growth, love, light, joy, change and/or awareness to your life.

The word Mandala comes from the Indian language of Sanskrit and translates to mean "circle". Mandalas represent wholeness and can used as a way of seeing life experiences and the human connection to each other and the beyond. Mandalas can be used for variety of purposes including, meditation, healing, relaxation, mindfulness, integration of chaotic thoughts, increasing awareness, and simple enjoyment.

Let this be the season you create your new beginning.

Please post your comments, discoveries, and mandalas here or on the Art with Grace Counseling Facebook page. I'd love to see them!!

To possibilities,
Grace
